About
Credit Card Processing These online credit card processors provide 2 different methods for processing credit cards: 1) Secure Form Gateways, and 2) programming APIs (written in Perl, C++, or Java). The Secure Form Gateways uses HTML form posts to send the credit card information securely over the Internet using Secure Socket Layers encryption. Customers simply fill out a form at the order processing stage providing shipping and billing information. This information is submitted to the credit card processing gateway over a SSL connection (so the data is encrypted when sent over the Internet), the card is processed, and the customer is returned to the original site upon successful processing of the credit card. With the API method, the information is still collected through a secure web page form, but the information is then sent over the Internet using a program that resides on the merchant's server, which connects to the credit card processor's system to process the credit card. This is done using a socket connection, with the data again being encrypted. This is generally faster and more reliable then using a Secure Form Gateway. Verisign and LinkPoint offer both methods for credit card processing, with the API method being more expensive, as it is intended for sites who process a large amount of credit cards. Costs for credit card processing varies greatly. Generally, there is a application fee for obtaining a merchant credit card account. If a merchant already has a merchant credit card account, they should check with their bank to see which of the online credit card processing services the bank supports and/or recommends. Then, there is a setup fee for the online processing service which can range from nothing to $395.00. Additionally, credit card processing companies often charge a transaction fee for each transaction (sometimes a flat rate of .25 and/or a percentage of the transaction amount), and a minimum monthly statement fee (usually $25.00 or so). CyberCart
and Credit Card Processing
CyberCart does not officially support CyberCash, as implementation of their systems across different servers has been problematic. CyberCash also has been bought by Verisign.
